Prager(Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Princeton University, USA) * Title: Fusion Power for a Green Energy Future * Speaker: Prof. Stewart C. Prager(Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Princeton University, USA) * Date & Time: Jun. 15 (Tue) 15:00 * Place: #512, Hogil Kim Memorial Bldg., POSTECH * Abstract To accommodate the inevitable large growth in energy use over the next century without producing severe climate change requires carbon-free energy sources of a magnitude much greater than exists today. Fusion energy offers unique potential to meet this need. Fusion energy is clean(produces no greenhouse gases), safe(no danger of runaway reactions and no serious proliferation risks), inexhaustible(fuel is available for thousands of years) and available to all nations. Fusion reactions take place in a hot gas(at 100 million degrees) called a plasma. The development of fusion energy required the development of a new field of science: plasma physics. The result has been that the fusion power produced in experiments has increased in magnetically confined plasmas from a fraction of a Watt in the 1960s to 10 million Watts today(although for a short time), and an experiment is currently under construction to produce 500 million Watts. From results and plans to date, one can project that fusion energy can enter the energy market at mid-century, on a time-scale relevant to world energy needs over this century. 첨부파일 |
